8 Ball Rules Forum

This is by far the commonest bar game played in America. It lends itself well to the coin operated table, where errantly-pocketed balls cannot be retrieved. Two players take turns shooting until they miss. One shoots the 1-7 balls, the "solids," while the opponent shoots the 9-15 balls, the "stripes." After a player pockets the entire group, he then attempts to pocket the eight ball in a called pocket.

There are many local variations to eight ball rules. Players can be required to call all shots (a favorite way to play). Generally, if the eight ball, which is centered in the rack, is sunk on the break, it's an instant victory for the player who broke. Scratching on an attempt to pocket the eight ball is usually penalized by loss of the game. Contacting an object ball with the cue ball might be required, with no contact being penalized as a scratch. An object pocket might be designated, where the first and last (or even all) of a player's group must be pocketed.

Eight-ball is played with sixteen balls: a cue ball, and fifteen object balls consisting of seven striped balls, seven solid-colored balls and the black 8 ball. After the balls are scattered with a break shot, the players are assigned either the group of solid balls or the stripes once a ball from a particular group is legally pocketed.

The ultimate object of the game is to legally pocket the eight ball in a called pocket, which can only be done after all of the balls from a player's assigned group have been cleared from the table.
