APA 8 Ball Tournament Rules Sudden Death & Forfeit

APA 8 Ball Tournament Rules Sudden Death & Forfeit

Hello. I am new to this forum and didn't find this topic anywhere.

I am taking a team to a season-end APA 8-ball tournament for the first time (in Austin, TX). There are 2 points of strategy I would like input on from the experienced team captains out there:

1) Sudden Death Quote from rules: "Each team match must be in the 5th individual match by the 3-hours-and-45 minutes mark, or all subsequent matches become a one game race."

I assume this means I need to hold back a higher skill level in case of Sudden Death. Fielding a 2 against a 7 in a 1 rack race would be disaster. Of course, I need to field whoever is necessary so I don't lose 3 of the first 4 matches. Any tips here? This form of Sudden Death seems pretty extreme (compared to the double points format in 9 ball).

2) Forfeiting matches Quote from rules: "Individual matches may be forfeited at anytime during a team match. If an individual match is forfeited after the rack has been broken, the skill level of both players in the match will count towards the 23-Rule. If an individual match is forfeited before the rack has been broken, the player on the team receiving the forfeit remains eligible to play again as the forfeit does not count as a match played. Both teams must be able to show at the end of the team match they could have fielded a legal team (Meaning they could have fielded five players that did not exceed 23 had all five individual matches been played)."

I only see one circumstance where I might choose to forfeit a match: If we are near the Sudden Death time and I am losing the 4th line badly, I could stop that match by forfeiting so I don't subject my last player to Sudden Death. Is this correct logic and are there other cases where an elective forfeit makes sense?

Thank you for any input!
