Scratch when Pocketing 8 Ball in Last Pocket 8 Ball

Scratch when Pocketing 8 Ball in Last Pocket 8 Ball

In last pocket 8 ball, what happens when you scratch when pocketing the 8 ball in the designated last pocket?

For example, if I make the 8 ball in my designated last pocket, but after it falls, the cue ball also drops into a pocket.

This question relates to the following billiard rules:

I have the same question about pocketing the 8 ball and scratching in last pocket 8 ball rules.

For example, if the last object ball is sunk, and only the 8 ball remains, but the player scratched sinking the 8 ball, do they lose?

In last pocket 8 ball, if you make the 8 ball and scratch, do you spot the 8 ball?

Are you both asking about what happens when you scratch the cue ball at the same time as shooting at the 8 ball? Two possible outcomes:

    • If you scratch and fail to pocket the 8-ball, you don't lose the game. Your inning is over, and your opponent gets ball in hand. If the opponent is any good, then it's pretty much over for you at this point.
    • If you scratch and successfully pocket the 8-ball, then the game is over, and you lose.

In last pocket 8-ball, if you scratch (sink the cue ball) and actually pocket the 8 ball on the same shot, then you lose the game.

You are all correct. It depends on the scenario.

If you are shooting to pocket the 8 ball in your designated last pocket, and you scratch, and...

    • you fail to pocket the 8-ball - then play passes to your opponent with cue-ball-in-hand anywhere on the playing surface, or,
    • you pocket the 8-ball - then you lose the game
      • @Johnny - this means there is no need to spot the 8 ball on a scratch when the 8 ball is sunk, since it's a loss of game, and the game is over.

This is based on standard 8-ball rules, since last pocket 8 ball follows standard 8 ball rules. According to the World-Pool-Billiard association, a "cue ball scratch" is considered a "standard foul", and a player loses the rack if they pocket the eight ball and foul.

Here are the relevant sections of the WPBA 8-ball rules which relate to the above:

    3. EIGHT BALL

    3.8 Losing the Rack

    The shooter loses if he

    • (a) pockets the eight ball and fouls;

    [...]

    3.9 Standard Fouls

The following are standard fouls at eight ball:

    • (6.1) Cue Ball Scratch or off the Table

Is there any other way to scratch EXCEPT by sinking the cue ball? I've never heard the term used in any other way. If "scratch" means by definition "sinking the cue ball" on a shot, then "by sinking the cue ball" is redundant and irrelevant.

You are right. I've always had a bad habit of over-explaining things and using to many words to get a point across.

I've cleaned up that part from the reply.

    Cheers!
