ID and Value of a 1980s Palmer Pool Cue

ID and Value of a 1980s Palmer Pool Cue

My grandpa died and left me this Palmer pool cue that he said cost $400+ in the 1980s.

Someone wants to buy it, but I think it’s worth a lot more than $400.

Can you identify this Palmer cue model and give me a idea of what it’s worth?

It hasn’t been used for 30 years.

You have a very nice Palmer Model 16 from the "third catalog".

    From palmercollector.com:

The 3rd catalog, introduced in 1971, was Palmer's most elaborate, best selling, and final line of custom designs. Joints were again redesigned and were now available in stainless steel, although brass, brushed brass, and nickel-silver were still frequently used. The Model 20, with it's ebony and pearl inlaid shaft, is the most sought after Palmer. These cues could be custom ordered well into the 1980s.

    ...and:

    Palmer Model 16 Pool Cue

    Model 16

This cue is based on the famed Model "J" from the 2nd Catalog. A new inlay shape appeared which gave the cue a distinguished look. Gone was the window and a pearl buttcap appeared in it's place. This is a handsome cue.

Most of the 3rd Catalog Model 16 cues had forearms made by the Szamboti's. Palmer was winding down their in-house forearm building at the time and more blanks were obtained from outside sources. The Szamboti built cues had points ending closer to the joint collar than the typical Palmer. These cues were not built in large numbers.

What is that squiggly shape anyway?

It's a modified French fleur-di-lis, the symbolic lily. It's done in genuine oyster mother of pearl . I have only seen these inlay shapes on Palmer cues, although luthiers have used them in guitars.

For a value, see the last answer on the previous question about the Palmer Model 16 cue value.

The person who gave that value is probably the most knowledgeable Palmer cue collector in the world today, and I would trust his assessment fully.

    Thank you so much!

It has been in a case for many years with very little play the last 30 years and looks brand new. It’s a beautiful cue stick.
