The "Three Go Down" Trick Shot

Learn how to set up the pool trick shot called "the three-go-down shot".

The "Three Go Down" Trick Shot

Less of a skill shot and more of a trick to impress your friends, the three go down shot is a very simple billiard trick shot and really just requires the ability to shoot straight and slow. It takes advantage of a few laws of physics to pull off a trick that’ll have your friends chuckling at your cleverness, and maybe even win you a little money if you set the situation up properly.

Three Go Down Shot Set Up

  1. Place two object balls so they’re touching each other and both are flat against a rail. It doesn’t matter where or which balls.
  2. Set the 8-ball on the rail so it’s between the two other object balls and is held up by them. You’ll have to do this very carefully so the object balls remain touching both each other and the rail and the 8-ball balances perfectly.
  3. Set the cue ball up so it’s pointing directly at the 8-ball. Get a bit of distance so that you can shoot slowly, but the cue will still hit the opposite rail.
  4. Tell your doting crowd of spectators (you’ve got one of those, right?) that you can hit the 8-ball cleanly without even touching the other two balls. This is your chance to make that sweet, sweet bet if you feel you can talk your way through it. You might even offer others a chance to try, if you’re confident they don’t know the secret to this trick.
  5. Once you’ve lined up your bets to secure that next round of wondrous drinks or five, shoot the cue ball slowly and straight at the 8-ball.
  6. While the ball is rolling toward the two object balls holding the 8-ball, firmly slap the table once or twice next to where you shot the ball.
  7. This force should transfer to the object balls, which will roll away from each other, dropping the 8-ball onto the table and letting your cue ball strike it cleanly.
  8. Collect the admiration and cash moneys of your comrades.
