Slate Thickness Required for a 9 Foot Pool Table

I recently spoke with a billiard table sales clerk and a pool table installer, both of which insisted that one-inch slate was inadequate for 9 foot pool table.

They both said that the slate thickness required for a 9' pool table was greater than one inch if I wanted the pool table to remain level.

Is this true and if so what is the preferred slate thickness for a 9 ft pool table?
