Are Jump Shots Legal?

Are Jump Shots Legal?

In general pool, are jump shots legal? It is always unclear when I'm playing with friends. We are always split 50-50 on what the actual rule is. I'm sure it varies from game to game.

This question relates to the following billiard rules:

The rules state: "Unless otherwise stated in rules for a specific game it is legal to cause the cue ball to rise off the bed of the table by elevating the cue stick on the shot, and forcing the cue ball to rebound from the bed of the table."

Can you specify exactly what billiard game you are talking about/playing?

Jump shots are legal in most pool games (assuming it's done properly), just make sure the place you're playing at allows them.

Agreed. Main things to check on would be house rules if you are playing someplace new. Confirm the rules on this aspect of the game before playing, and you'll be okay. Also, as Kyle mentions, don't try to physically lift the ball with the cue and launch it over the obstructing ball. Proper jump shots are performed with almost identical contact as a normal shot.
