Types of Pool Tournament Sponsorships
This article discuses some of the types of sponsorship which pool tournament organizers seek, and also the types of organizations which sign on as sponsors of cue sport events.
Types of Pool Tournament Sponsorships
There are several classifications of sponsorship in cue sports, in general, that one might see at pool tournaments or other billiard related events.
Types of Sponsors of Billiard Tournaments
There are several levels (or tiers) of sponsorship:
- Corporate Sponsors from within the industry - Typically we see major companies from within the cue sports industry sponsoring events. Companies like Predator (cue makers) and Brunswick (billiard table makers) are examples of this type of sponsor. They are typically tier-1 sponsors, and tend to have deeper pockets. Typically the entire tournament or tour is named after the tier-1 sponsor and their advertisements and names are shown prominently.
- Smaller industry-related sponsors - The next level of sponsorship is typically Tier-2 (and so-on), and consist of companies which have smaller budgets than those listed above.
Besides industry-related sponsors, there can be sponsors from different (but somewhat similar) industries. Non Cue-sport industries known to sponsor billiard tournaments and events include the beer and alcohol industries, online gaming, television networks (such as ESPN), and sporting good retailers. Companies from within these industries feel that cue sports are closely-enough related to their own industries to justify the expenditure. They feel that the spectators would be interested in their products or services based on their interest in billiards, snooker or other cue sport.
There will be more to come in this series on pool tournament sponsorship.
