Playing 8 Ball and/or 1-15 With Only 3 Players

Playing 8 Ball and/or 1-15 With Only 3 Players

At Mission Royale, we play 1-15 8 ball with 3 players when we're short 1 player.

Here's the problem:

EX: 1-3 team against 2.

  • We had been letting 1 break
  • We had been having 3 rack.

Shoot order would be 1(B), 2, 3, 2 as a follow thru for a complete game.

Here is the question:

As the number 2 player is the underdog, It has been brought to our attention that the following should be true and used as the shooters rules.

EX: 1-3 team against 2

  • Number 2 player would break.
  • Number 1 racks.

Shooting order should be: 2 (B), 3, 2, 1 as a follow thru for the complete game.

We are looking for rules for non 3 ball play. I really would like to maybe find a rule or maybe a majority decision by the billiards pros to help us determine best game play.

This question relates to the following billiard rules:

If you are playing 8-Ball with three players then it must be either 1 player vs. 2 players, or 1 person sits out, tends bar, and plays winner.

In a "1 player vs. 2 players" game, each player counts their balls dropped and you rotate through the group, alternating the single player team. The break shot belongs to the single team. We play to either 100 drops or to a dozen games. Either one is fine whatever you decide.

One Pocket could be played in a similar rotational team fashion.

Some other 3 person games are fun and challenging. Take "Screw Your Neighbor" for example. We lag for break, all balls pocketed on the break shot are spotted and the breaker is given the choice of balls (1-5, 6-10, 11-15). If no balls drop on break, then the next player up. This player must drop a ball before declaring which group of balls are "theirs",. The object is to pocket all of your opponent's balls. Break goes to first player eliminated. We play it as a "called shot" game where the shooter declares ball and pocket, never mind path or caroms. It is just the ball and the target pocket, just as we play 8-Ball.

Golf is another good 3 person game I have played it, but it has been so long ago the rules escape me now.
