From what you wrote, it seems as though your scenario involves the cue ball slightly out from the object ball with a clear path to the rail. It appears that you are wondering the following; If you hit the object ball directly straight-on toward the rail, will it bounce back and hit the cue ball once again?

Well, the answer obviously depends on several factors. If you are playing on a perfect table (which many tables are far far from) then possibly. If you strike the cue ball hard enough, and straight, it should come back and strike the cue ball. Again though, there are too many factors at stake to give a solid answer on this one.

BTW - wondering why you don't get out there and test the question on the table?

I think it will. But the cue ball has to move a little away from it so the ball will bounce.
