Willow Billiard Club Article from Pool & Billiard Magazine

New York City residents are looking for other alternatives. Hoboken, New Jersey is one of them. In just five minutes you can drive through the Lincoln Tunnel from Manhattan to Hoboken. This small town (one square mile), is where New Yorkers are flocking to in order to escape the stress of living in the big city. Half a century ago, Hoboken was an immigrant town, filled with Europeans hoping to make a better life for themselves and their children in this country. "Ol' Blue Eyes" was born and raised here.

This is where Bob and Cory Glick have strategically placed their new posh billiard room - Willow Billiard Club and Lounge.

Bob Glick, retired at the end of 1988, was looking to venture into a new business that he and his wife Cory could enjoy. He read an article in Time Magazine about the resurgence of pool. He said, "After reading that article, I became so excited, because I knew what I wanted to do." Cory wholeheartedly agreed.

Looking for a location in Manhattan was a frustrating experience. Rents were outrageously high and landlords were uncompromising. The Glicks felt that they would have to charge their customers too much in order to meet such an expensive overhead. So they decided to look elsewhere.

Bob spotted a former garage and car dealership for rent in Hoboken and knew immediately that he had found his location. After four months of construction, not a trace of what was, remained. Walls were torn down, the space was gutted and twenty coats of paint were tediously removed form the walls to expose the original bricks. The work was grueling and costly, but Bob and Cory persevered. They were determined to build a billiard room that their customers and neighbors would be proud to be associated with. And they did. And they are.

The Glicks were also able to obtain one thing that 99 percent of the billiard rooms in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut could not obtain. A liquor license. Their township is one of the very few in the entire tri-state area that did not ban liquor in billiard rooms.

The finished product is a warm, classy atmosphere, decorated with mahogany wood, brass and onyx lamps, 12 new Brunswick Gold Crown III tables and 2 Peter Vitalie Lord Nelson tables. The original exposed bricks give the room a rustic warmth. The mahogany bar extends 22 feet long and is lined with 14 brass-rimmed stools. Mirrors adorn the room for visual pleasure. The bar is fully stocked and beer is served on tap and, of course in frozen mugs only.

The Glicks also supply their customers with free pocket billiard instructions on Thursday and Saturday nights from a nationally ranked professional. Tournaments will also be held on a regular basis.

Willow Billiard Club and Lounge is truly a family operation with the Glicks' sons, Gary and Ed, as Manager and Bartender. Their other bartenders, Oscar and Mike, are affectionately referred to as their "adopted sons."

Are the Glicks having as much fun as they had hoped? "You bet," says Cory. "Bob is having a blast with the microphone system." With that, Bob got on the mic and announced: "Attention K-Mart shoppers…" The place broke up laughing. Good for Bob and Cory, and good for us too.
