Blatt Billiards was born in the roaring 1920s when New York had more than 2,000 pool halls. Sam Blatt began the Blatt tradition crafting pool cues and billiard balls by hand; he also serviced and supplied pool halls in New York. Sam's son, Maurice, continued the business with a frugal hand and hard-work ethic during the war, accumulating a vast collection of used pool tables from bankrupt pool-room owners. Ron Blatt learned the pool-table business, watching his father and grandfather; his eye for fine craftsmanship developed as he followed his dad around the old pool tables. When Ron started to run the company in 1969, he asked longtime employee Eric Roeder to join him as a partner. They focused Blatt Billiards on the restoration and creation of the finest pool tables in the world. Now the fourth-generation Blatt family and second-generation Roeder family are involved; Paul Blatt, Ron's son, and Bruce Roeder, Eric's son, are working in this world-renowned pool-table business.
Blatt Billiards Building Layout
Ronald Blatt's grandfather Samuel Blatt founded the company in 1923 in Freehold, NJ, and shortly after, moved the firm to The Bronx in NY. When the Cross Bronx Expressway was designed to tear through the building, Blatt Billiards relocated to 809 Broadway.
Each floor of the 35,000-square-foot building is dedicated to a different part of manufacturing the tables, which weigh 1,000 to 1,800 pounds each, have names like Claridge and Friar Briggs, and take six to eight months to complete. On the cabinet-making floor, members of the 48-person staff cut wood and carve details onto the sides of the tables. A couple floors up, workers on the finishing floor turn table legs on lathes and polish surfaces. Another floor is dedicated to antiques and has pool tables stacked to the ceiling four tables high.

Blatt Billiards Sells Historic 809 Broadway Building
The 23,152 sq ft, six-story Blatt Billiards building at 809 Broadway in New York City, NY just south of Union Square was sold in May of 2013 for $24 million to IDM Capital. The historic 809 Broadway building was built in 1887 and includes 7,045 sq ft of air rights. The new owners have filed plans to add ten stories to the former Blatt Billiards building for a $50 million mixed residential and commercial development. The historic loft building has housed numerous companies in its 126-year history and was a prominent fixture among the large swath of factories and workshops that once lined Broadway, south of 14th Street. Billiard table maker Blatt Billiards, which opened in 1923, moved into the space in 1943 and purchased the building in 1972. Blatt Billiards housed both its manufacturing and showroom spaces in the building. Blatt Billiards has relocated its manufacturing facilities to NJ and it's showroom facilities to 330 W 38th ST in New York City, NY. The loss of Blatt Billiards manufacturing operations from the area represents the end of manufacturing at 809 Broadway, and in the area as a whole.
