Good Instructional Billiard DVD?

Good Instructional Billiard DVD?

My son and daughter, both young adults, and I are really getting into pool lately. I'd like to find a really good instructional video for them for a Christmas present.

My son is in an APA league with me; We both started this year. He is rated a 4 but could very well advance to a 5 by the end of the winter season because he regularly beats 6's straight up. My daughter isn't in the league, but is about my level. I'm rated a 3 (bottom of the ranking for men, right where I belong) and win most of my matches, with the handicap.

I'd like to find something that isn't too elementary, well produced, a professional presentation, and not just a pro showing off.

Ditto for books - sounds like Byrne's is the one to get. I have the 99-shot book and it is pretty good. Any thoughts?

Hey Samiam, Welcome to the forum. I have been sitting here for a while thinking over your question. That is a tough one. I like the Monk series but he is more of fundimentals and practice drills. It is good if your hooked on the game but it isn't a DVD you can sit and watch for long periods. You might try Mika Immonen's new series "Mastering Pool". I like the format and you don't HAVE to sit through his trick shots if you're not in the mood. My only other suggestion would be buy some instructor time. In fact if you find a pool instructor in your neighborhood you might see if he/she will cut you a break on a family session. What fun to play together and learn together.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Good Luck! and Merry Christmas!

    -Doug

You may want to go to this web site Http:// www. engr.colostate.edu/pool Dr Dave has a very good book and also a great DV called "The Illustrated Principles of Pool and Billiards." I have both and refer to them often. They are reasonably priced and well worth it.

As a family, you will get a lot from reading and watching both items.

    Good luck and have fun.

I second Quick's recommendation, and here's why. There are a lot of "methods" out there, some probably work very well, but DR.Dave's stuff is really the only scientifically/empirically supported techniques. I'm not much of an academic myself, but I think there is a lot of validity to Dave's stuff.

You must have some academic talent in order to set up and run this forum. I think.

Doug and quickshot, many thanks for the tips. I checked out the Mika Immonen set, and they look really good.

Hi I am glad to hear of new pool players being born, in a sense of the word, everyday. I have a link in my signature to my site where I have many of the best books and dvds I recommend. I do not sale any myself but the ones that I like are on my page in links to them.
