Billiards and Snooker Body Hopeful of Inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics After Paris 2024 Snub

It’s a well-known fact by now that neither Snooker, Billiards nor Pool will be a part of 2020 Tokyo Olympics. These sports missed out gaining Olympic recognition after their bid was rejected in 2016.

Billiards in 2028 Olympics

With 5 new Olympic sports in Tokyo 2020, and Billiards/Snooker/Pool not being one of them, there’s not a lot to cheer about for the cue sports enthusiasts in the coming months. Not just that, early last year it was announced that Pool or Billiards or Snooker will not make it to the 2024 Paris Olympic games either. Jason Ferguson, Chairman, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association expressed great frustration at the news, when it came at that time.

Jason Ferguson disappointed but determined

As per Jason, the wait to see these sports become a part of the Olympic Games could be even longer. He had said that it will be extremely difficult for these sports to make an impact in Los Angeles 2028 Olympics as well because there will be many more sports that will be competing for the spots.

As of now, England is perceived as the main arena for cue sports as it plays host to prominent snooker, pool and billiards championships. Ferguson believes that the World Championships will continue to be the pinnacle events of these sports, but they will continue their efforts to bring Olympic status to them in the times ahead. He stressed that making this possible is more about obtaining government funding for the sport in countries across the world. Ferguson agreed that Olympics is an excellent platform and the snub has been extremely disappointing for the Snooker and Billiards fans throughout the world, including in India and England.

Billiards 2024 group working towards LA 2028 now

Regardless of the bleak prospects, the Billiards 2024 group which was formed to get Billiards entry into Paris 2024 Olympic Games, is focused on bringing Olympic recognition to the sport in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics now. Diane Wilde, General Secretary, World Confederation of Billiards Sports had said in an interview last year that they were working on a huge bidding campaign and were united in their approach to bring recognition to the sport.

Cue Sports in the 2028 Olympics

It’s no news that millions and millions of fans across the world both play and enjoy watching cue sports like billiards, pool and snooker throughout the year. Still, their efforts to get them entry into the Olympic Games have failed time after time. Echoing the same sentiments as Jason Ferguson, Diane said that despite the disappointment of not being included in the Paris 2024 Olympics, their goal is now to unitedly move ahead and target the LA 2028.

The special committee Billiards 2024 had informed through a statement that they were looking forward to launching another major bidding campaign in a place where Pool actually came into existence. Making it the place where cue sports gain such recognition would be a remarkable feat!
