8 Ball Foul Scenarios

8 Ball Foul Scenarios

There are a few 8-ball foul scenarios which I'm not sure I found correct answers on, so would appreciate your wisdom:

  1. I'm going for the 8 ball, but missing it (cue ball touches nothing or the opponent's ball); the opponent still has object balls - Is it a loss, or considered to be a standard foul?
  2. Other way around - the opponent (who goes after object balls) fouls - what's his penalty? Do I get a free ball (ball in hand) even though I'm going for the 8 ball?
  3. Same question, but now both are going for the 8 ball, and one player misses it (touches nothing) - What's his penalty?

Thanks!

    1. According to World-Pool-Billiard-Association, it is considered a standard foul (6.3 No Rail after Contact), which states:

If no ball is pocketed on a shot, the cue ball must contact an object ball, and after that contact at least one ball (cue ball or any object ball) must be driven to a rail, or the shot is a foul.

The shot you described fails all of those requirements. The Incoming player gets ball-in-hand anywhere on the table.

    2. Few different answers depending on the nature of our opponent's foul:

      • If your opponent commits a "standard foul" (vs. a "serious foul"), you would get ball-in-hand anywhere on the table. It doesn't matter that you are shooting at the 8 ball. That is irrelevant.
      • If he commits one of the "serious fouls", he loses the game.
      • If he is cited for "6.17 Unsportsmanlike Conduct", the referee will choose a penalty appropriate given the nature of the offense.
    3. Same answer as that in question 1.

You can view the various levels of fouls (and what each foul is) by viewing the documents on the WPBA website:
