Were Olhausens made of particle board in the 80s?

Were Olhausens made of particle board in the 80s?

A friend has offered to give me their 8' Olhausen table for free (if I move it, of course). The table appears to date from 1989, and is in very good condition, although the cushions are a little dead and probably need replacing. I don't know what the model is, but it appears very similar to the "Drake II" model in the current "L Series". The rails appear to be solid oak, but the apron, cabinet and legs all appear to be laminated particle board. Moving the table will probably cost me $350, and replacing the cushions will probably add $150-200 to that.

Although the price is right (i.e., free), I'm a little concerned whether $500-600 for moving/recushioning is worth the investment, for a table that's mostly particle board. It didn't even look like it would survive the move very well. Buying a nice used solid wood Olhausen table will probably cost around $1400-1500, delivery and set up included.

My questions: Did Olhausen make particle board tables in the late 1980s, and if so, are they still decent quality, for what they are? Is this deal too good to pass up for a free Olhausen, even a laminated one?

P.S. - This will be my first table; I have 3 young boys aged 3-9 who I want to get started on pool, so an entry-level table might be good for them. At the same time, I'm not really adverse to making the bigger investment (roughly $1K) for a solid table that will last for generations. What would you do?

Thanks in advance...

Probably, Olhausen make "manufactured wood product covered with laminates" today as the low end line.

When faced with this nearly 3 years ago, I opted for the solid wood varietal (roughly $3500 for the table and setups). Olhausen also make a mid-range table with some solid wood and some "manufactured wood product" mainly hidden from view (about $2200). The easiest way to figure this question out for yourself is to go visit an Olhausen dealer and then get up under the table and observe the interrior(s) under the tables for yourself.
