MDF Billiard Tables

MDF Billiard Tables

I am looking into buying a new pool table for cheap. Mainly the cheap billiard tables are made from MDF, and the problem most people have is warping in them.

So my question was just that how prone to warping is an MDF pool table and how unplayable is it when warped?

New slate pool tables can be found for as little as $1500.

Used slate pool tables can be found for as little as $600 (in decent condition) add to this $200-$250 for the table mechanic to move it.

Accept nothing less than slate for the bed of the table.

Yeah I agree that slate pool tables are better but more expensive...

    But I was just wondering:

    • If an MDF pool table will last long enough for me to really care about the warping?
    • If I put it in my basement in how long until will it begin to warp?
    • And when it does warp, will it be really unplayable?
    • If that happens, then by how much will its value decrease?
    • Is a warped MDF pool table repairable in any way?

Sounds like you're asking how long a rope is. Virtually impossible questions to answer without knowing you on a very personal level.

How long does it usually take you to care about a flaw ? What part of the country do you live in and how damp is your basement? Will it really be playable? How well do you play? How well do you tolerate imperfection? Who will you be playing with ? (Like you and the kids, or you and your pro buddies)

Repairable? It would all depend on what you really want it for and your level of repair experience . (Should that even become necessary) Life is a gamble. You might get lucky and find a bargain that doesn't need much of anything but a good cleaning.

Here is another way to look at it. If you're not a perfectionist and you run across a table for a couple of bills, then I'm sure you will get at least that much entertainment out of it. ( It costs that much just for a concert or amusement park ) If it becomes un playable, toss it out and get another one.or use it for a different purpose. You loose nothing.

But if you're a perfectionist, don't take the cheap route. Spend a little more if you can or you will never be happy with it. If you have a good solid beginning you can always make improvements as you go .

I hope I didn't come off as a little snoot. I'm really not like that. I'm just a logical thinker. There really is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on what makes you happy. Best of luck
