Prepping a cue stick for play?

Today, we had our pool table setup. I recall our installer saying we need to do something to the tip prior to play, otherwise we could risk ripping the felt. I think he said something about using sandpaper to smooth out the tip, but I don't recall if he meant the edges of the tip or the tip itself. What do I need to do?
