Pool Cue and Pool Cue Case Maintenance

So just got my first cue -- They didnt have any thread protectors at the store, so I was wondering should I place Cue in threads first or but first. (Thread first would mean its resting on the threads when I carry it.

Also to ensure long life of the cue, is there any regular maitenence that I should do on it. // When should the tip be replaced?
