In North American pool and billiards, the term "english" refers to a way of hitting the cue ball so as to cause it to begin to side-spin. I think that the concept was introduced to this country by the British, and someone gave the technique the name "english." Also, when you read the history of the sport, there is a lot of stuff from the English, o English Billiards.

Thats all I know, but if someone knows more, I'd be interested in finding out!

It's really funny all English people wonder at it! Thanks.
