Looking for Opinions on My New Pool Table

Looking for Opinions on My New Pool Table

Last night i went and picked up an old 8' 1-piece slate bar box someone on craigslist was giving away. This thing is in rough shape, but I am willing to put in some serious work to have a decent table at my disposal.

I think its an old Valley Cougar pool table but there are no markings or emblems on it.

I already have some ideas on what I want to do with it.

Here is a pic of the table before we moved it to my place.

Obviously it will need new rails and felt, but for the aesthetics. I am up in the air. I was thinking about taking off all the metal and getting it powder-coated a nice gun-metal grey, then strip off the old finish on the wood and paint it (not stain) black, then re-seal. I have not been able to come up with any threads anywhere of someone else trying something similar, is that a good indication that what i have in mind is a bad idea?

My main concern is the diamonds on the rails. If I paint over them, is it as simple as measuring out and applying new ones under or over the finish?

Any and all options, ideas and criticism are welcome.

You have taken on a project that will take a lot of patience. As for the diamonds, why don't you cut some painters tape in the shape of the diamonds and cover them while you are doing the other work. I wish you a lot of luck in your project.

Hmm, I had not thought about painting on the diamonds, I found some push in "sights" on billiard online catalog. As for a ton of work, I had no idea how well these tanks were put together. It took me 4 hours today to just get the pockets out and all the metal off.

I found a tag inside it that said american shuffleboard, so I guess its not a cougar and after wrestling with the ball return's guts I think its gonna be a drop pocket table.

update: this thing looks nothing like it did when i first got it. it has new legs that are (4) 4x4's bolted together with 1/2" hardware, skinned in with 3/4" MDF for looks. then theres the rhino liner paint job all around . . . even the rails sealed with about 10 coats of poly. i had to re-build the side where the ball box for the return is, so there is a "rach shelf" now, and i had all the metal powdercoated a deep silver with tons of flake.

only thing i got left to do is totally re-make the ball return system, slap some pockets in, and get my rail sights installed. i got something really unique planned for the rail sights, and i'll be sure to post a pic or 3 when its ready. its soooo close to be ready for rails and felt . . . i cant wait!
