Steps to Set Up a Pool Table

Cloudbow Billiards outlines the steps Connelly Billiards took to deliver and install his new pool table.

Steps to Set Up a Pool Table

The Connelly Billiards delivery truck arrived an hour-and-a-half ahead of schedule, which was fine by us!

Watching the two guys assemble the table was interesting. They brought the base in one piece with the legs attached. The rails were in two sections and already had the cushions attached. The framed slate was in three sections.

I didn't watch them every minute, but here is the general sequence of events:

  1. Measure the room and put the table in the exact playing center.
  2. Place the three sections of slate on the table. (They may have done some preliminary leveling at this point, I don't recall.)
  3. Smooth the two seams on the slate with some kind of spackle stuff.
  4. Drape the cloth over the slate bed and staple one side (a long side) to the frame beneath the slate.
  5. Pull tight and staple the cloth on the other side, moving from one end of the table to the other.
  6. Pull and staple the ends (I was out of the room and didn't see them do this, but it seems like the logical thing to do.) At this point, one of the workers asked me to run my hand along the top of the table to see if I could feel the seams of the slate. When they were putting on the slate, I had expressed concern about being able to detect where the seams were. He assured me that I wouldn't be able to see or feel the seams. He was right.
  7. Place the rails in position and bolt them to the base and slate frame.
  8. Attach the pockets.
  9. Level the table. Our floor was not too level, so they used what looked like four-inch square, thin pieces of wood under the legs to level it. The table was perfectly level when they finished.
  10. Stick on the foot spot. (He asked me beforehand which end of the table we would be breaking from.)

And that's it! We have a pool table.
